Presidential Debates, Zingers And Client Development

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Presidential Debates, “Zingers” and Client Development Tonight we get to watch the political equivalent of a 15 round heavyweight world championship fight. The sad thing is it will be reported and analyzed the same way. Instead of reporting and analyzing how each candidate will create jobs, reduce the debt, deal with Iran getting a nuclear bomb, deal with terrorists and a variety of incredibly important issues facing the country, the pundits will tell viewers whether either candidate: I hope I am wrong, but I fear that in the end, voters will not get the substantive answers they seek from the candidates or the analysts. That kind of  analysis even started before the debate. US News reported:  6 Best ‘Zingers’ From Past Presidential Debates. The New Yorker, in what it apparently thought was humorous, published  PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT, suggesting that the Romney team was having him practice the 6 zingers from the US News article. Vanity Fair reported:  Presidential Debate Prep: The Drinking Games, the Zingers, and Lowered Expectations!. I could go on with link after link from respected publishers writing about debate style rather than substance. If either candidate tries a zinger, it had better be a good one. If, not, viewers will almost always side with the candidate on the receiving end.  If you want an example, watch this short clip from one of the Bush-Gore debates. In this short clip, when Jim Lehrer asks Bush what the difference is between the candidates, Bush answers “I can get it done” and gets a small response from the audience. Al Gore does not make a verbal zinger. Instead, he moves in on George Bush’s space in an apparent effort to intimidate him. Gore’s move and Bush’s nod received greater coverage than anything substantive the candidates said. I suppose there are some clients who want to hire lawyers who have a knack for one line zingers to use in a tough negotiation or trial. After all, we have all heard of clients looking for a lawyer who is meaner than a junkyard dog. But, I believe most clients are looking for lawyers with good judgment and innovative ideas to deal with problems. A very high percentage of voters have decided whether they will vote for  Obama-Biden or Romney-Ryan and whatever happens in the debate will not sway them to change. For those undecided voters who watch the debate, do you think a candidate’s performance will make a difference? If so will it be demonstration of good judgment and ideas to deal with problems, or the candidates zingers and debate style?       I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

Train Your Brain For Better Memory

Train Your Brain for Better Memory Matthew Barrett, founding father of Brain Trainers, is the speaker for our November 18 WorkSource Professional Network meeting. Barrett has a Masters diploma in Psychology and calls himself a “personal trainer for the mind.” His classes take cutting-edge cognitive neuroscience and turn the science into entertaining and accessible shows for his audience. We spent a while together lately talking about what “brain coaching” is and why it issues to jobseekers. Barrett says that Brain Trainers helps professionals remember and analyze details, make good choices sooner, assume intuitively and insightfully, and stay competitive in a changing market. “Seventy percent of what I train audiences is about how THE mind works,” he says. “The other thirty % of what you have to understand is about how YOUR mind works.” You can improve your brain by engaged on specific skills that you just wish to master or improve. Exercises can help you remember whatever you need â€" numbers, faces, details or instructions â€" and can also help you be extra creative, clear up problems quicker and combat any decline you may experience as you age. In our November 18 assembly, he’s going to concentrate on a standard drawback: forgetting faces and names. Full disclosure: I endure from an lack of ability to recollect names and faces, and it incessantly frustrates and embarrasses me. My in any other case reliable reminiscence fails me in networking situations, and I even have been reluctant to easily blame my age, as a result of I’ve by no means been good at this ability. Barrett says that I’m right to think it’s caused by something else. Most individuals, he says, keep in mind faces better than names. That’s as a result of there’s a part of our mind that’s wired to recognize faces; it’s an ancient survival approach from our caveman days. If you couldn’t keep in mind which caveman was part of your clan and which was your enemy, you’d be extra prone to die younger. So our brains developed facial recognition technology. But we by no means developed an analogous system for names. Added to that's the fact that most of us stopped making fun of individuals’s names in concerning the third grade. Why is that an issue? Because that name association â€" no matter how cruel â€" was top-of-the-line methods to recollect names. “Ellie, Ellie, she’s so smelly” was a crude but effective model of a mnemonic(ne-MON-ick) device, a technique for remembering details or numbers. “Because we work so hard, from third grade on, at neutralizing any affiliation with names,” says Barrett, “we have no actual instruments to commit them to memory.” The key to remembering names is to maneuver them from short to lengthy-term reminiscence, or as Barrett refers to them, “from your desktop / workspace to your file cupboard/ storage space.” Our quick-term reminiscence “desktop” can only hold 4 or 5 ideas for 10 â€" 12 seconds. After that seconds, when yo u have not used one of many methods that will assist that data transition to the “file cabinet,” you will nearly actually neglect it. Next: The 5 associations that can assist you bear in mind faces and names. Published by candacemoody Candace’s background includes Human Resources, recruiting, coaching and assessment. Future Proof Not Really! - Workology

Future Proof Not Really! No Lack of Guidance Recently I was reading an article that talked about “future proof” jobs you can train for; that reminded me that I have a book in my office called The Future-Proof Workplace. Although it is full of great tips for what workplaces and individuals can do to help their careers, its title gave me pause, as did the title of the article. I don’t think we can future-proof anything! Why? We don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow. If you woke up in Mexico City today your future is very different than what you thought it was going to be before the earthquake hit. Those people that had lives disrupted by hurricanes Harvey, Irma or now Marie did not know exactly what their future held. So you cannot “future-proof” your life or job. What you have to do is prepare for possible futures. The goal of a good “futurist” is not to predict the future but to determine alternative futures in order to be prepared to deal with different possible outcomes. As in building a house to be earthquake or hurricane resistant you can build career tracks that can help make you resistant to technological unemployment. No Lack of Guidance There is certainly no lack of guidance on what you need to do to build a plan for alternative careers or alternative paths for a company. One author, Mark Samuels, writing for ZDNet, says that there are four skill sets that every CIO needs to have to be successful in that role. These are applicable to everyone and they include: Being a storyteller Being a futurist Being a team player Being a networker You learn more about what these skill sets mean by reading my article,  Future Friday: The skill sets needed for the HR professional of the future. A second author, futurist Graeme Codrington, strategy consultant at TomorrowToday Global,  writes  about the same concerns. His advice points out the skills that humans will need to be relevant in a future world include: Creativity and ingenuity. It will yet be awhile, so we think before machines will get to this point. Sense-making. Machines are great at producing data but are not all that good at determining what that data means. However, they will get there. Unstructured problem-solving. Machines need rules, people can operate without them. Common sense. Common sense can be rule-based, but as the saying goes “common sense” is not all that common. Ethics and morals. Choices are not always obvious. There are subtleties often necessary that machine code cannot handle. As Codrington says: “An intelligent machine’s ‘moral code’ is only as good as the data it receives from humans â€" it doesn’t have metacognitive awareness itself.” Identifying errors. Since machines are coded by humans it is humans who will have to identify the errors, at least for many years to come. Empathy, love, care, and compassion. This is the most human of these skills. Not all humans are very good at this, as we have spent decades turning workers into machines. Many will have to relearn these skills. But as Codrington says “The human touch is indispensable for most jobs…” Both of these authors have good advice but that advice only goes so far. Applying these “skills” will help you create a “future-resistant” career by making you more versatile, but nothing can make you “future-proof.”

Heres What to Keep in Mind When Hiring People with a Disability

Heres What to Keep in Mind When Hiring People with a Disability One of the worst kept secrets in recruitment is there are still plenty of employers who are not very keen on hiring disabled people for a particular job opportunity in their organization. At times, well-qualified and deserving candidates are ignored for less-deserving candidates that are not suffering from any disability. At the other end of the spectrum, recruiters have to cope with physically-challenged yet deserving candidates who arent very confident about coping with the work responsibilities assigned to them. Their disability saps at their confidence and they begin to question their own suitability for a particular job. Your job as a recruiter is to find the right candidate for a particular job, or if you think from the job searchers perspective, you need to put through a particular candidate to the right job. Through the course of your work, what if you come across a disabled person who you think is a perfect fit for a particular job opportunity? In such cases, you need to keep  a few things in mind while hiring this person. Although we would like to believe the process of hiring a disabled person shouldnt be different from that of hiring a non-disabled person, such thinking might not help you in the hunt for the right candidate. Lets take a look at some of the aspects you must consider if you are planning to hire a disabled person for a particular job: Can the workplace be easily accessed by the person/can the person move around the workplace without difficulty? Now there are organizations who make it a point to make their building/office space and the surroundings more accessible for the disabled. But what if you are hiring for organization whose premises are not very disabled friendly. In such cases, if the person is mobility challenged, and uses a wheelchair for movement, he might not be a perfect fit for the particular job opportunity. Quite obviously the fault in this case lies with prospective employer, but it makes no sense to hire the person for a particular position in that organization and make life difficult for him. In such cases, its better to talk to such employers and know whether they are willing to implement the necessary changes that will make their workplace more accessible for disabled persons. If the answer is a yes, go ahead, if its a no, its advisable not to hire that person. RELATED:  Is Your  Office  Good for Your  Health? What are the prospective employers views about hiring a disabled person? If an organization has tasked you with finding a candidate to fill in a particular vacancy, it isnt going to categorically tell you not to line up a disabled candidate. However, its important that as a recruiter, you have a very clear idea of who the employer will deem to be a suitable candidate. There is no point in lining up a  particular candidate, who sails through the selection process, but the employer finally decides not to hire the candidate because hes uncomfortable with hiring a disabled person. This is something akin to a humiliation for the candidate involved, and you dont want to put him through it, do you? So, make sure you are well aware about where the prospective employers stand as far as hiring disabled people for their workforce is concerned. Also, be aware that employers might give you politically correct answers or even a diplomatic answers to a direct question regarding their particular views. Your job is to cotton on to their actual views and select your candidates accordingly. Where does the candidate stand vis-à-vis the job opportunity? If and when you do line up an interview for differently abled candidates, its important to get into their minds. Talk to them about what they expect from their job and their employers. Also, try and gauge their readiness to take up a particular job opportunity. Find out whether they expect some special consideration from the employer because of their disability. For e.g leeway as far as office timings are concerned. Make sure you answer all your doubts and any questions you have in your mind, before zeroing in on these candidates. This will also help you judge their levels of confidence in their own ability. If you think the jobs going to put the potential candidate in a pressure cook situation all the time, you need to find somebody who is really very confident about his ability to handle any situation and face any amount of pressure. Its all about understanding their problem and “insecurities”: The disabled face a set of challenges that the abled cannot even begin to imagine. In spite of these challenges, they are willing to ignore their  pain and discomfort to work and lead satisfied lives. They do not want their life to be different from anybody elses, and they dont want their disability to come in the way of doing their job. As a recruiter you can only help these people land the right job, if you  understand the problems they might encounter at the work place and knowing whether they are ready for it. Most people are ready to meet these problems head on, but there is a section of people who need to be convinced to do so. Its your job as a recruiter to convince them they are the prefect fit for a particular job opportunity. If you do not keep these things in mind, you might unknowingly force the candidate into a work environment that is not conducive for a disabled person. In the long run, it might just make this person more uncomfortable and less productive. It will make the person less confident about his ability to handle job responsibilities. You play a crucial role in making sure this doesnt happen. Author: Lura Peterson is associated with Topmobility.com. They are specialized in pride go go scooters for disabled and senior people. Best strategies for updating office technology

Best strategies for updating office technology The development of technology has galloped ahead in recent times, and it’s obvious that as individuals we are quite good at getting excited about the next must-have gadget, rushing out to find smartwatches or smartglasses as fast as possible. However, when it comes to organizing the workplace, there is not the same sense of urgency attached to upgrading systems and equipment, even though doing so has been demonstrated to improve efficiency and promote growth. With so much available to improve your workplace productivity and efficiency, ignoring new technologies is surely a recipe for failure. Here are a few examples of areas to consider if you decide to conduct a technology audit at the office. Evaluating business functions   Some office functions may be similar across a range of different types of businesses, and may include the requirement for accounting systems, document production, or preparation of displays and presentations, while others will be more specialized and geared to a specific sector. Finance is a good example as the way in which the exchanges such as Wall Street work is very different to how your friendly, local branch of a bank is managed and run: their functions, operations, and therefore their technology needs are simply not identical. If you start by making a list of the various tasks that have to be achieved, by whom, and what the system timeframe is, then you can turn this into a workflow chart that will help you see quickly and easily which areas need attention.   Presentations Today, managers are turning from the traditional PowerPoint model that requires a computer desk or laptop to the portable projector; you can view, assess, and purchase these online. These are digital projectors with crystal-clear pictures and audio capabilities, so you can use them for animated as well as still presentations and for screening movies and videos. They have multiple connectivity, so they can be adapted to fit many different types of systems â€" ideal tools for office training courses, presentations to clients, and for use in meeting rooms. Check out the variety of brands and what their specifications are at www.for-sale.in/portable-projector. Document production Despite the rise and rise of cloud computing and the ability to exchange, contribute to and edit documents electronically, most offices still have a requirement to produce printed scans or copies at some point. If your office is still using a photocopier, you may want to analyze whether you should reconsider your strategy. You could switch to a multifunction printer or standalone scanners and printers â€" this will depend on the quality and volume of printing, the speed at which you need the equipment to deliver, the space you can spare, and how you feel about investing in consumables such as toners or ink. There are plenty of high-quality machines on the market from brands such as Canon and Xerox. Getting it right Both these examples demonstrate how the ability to choose the correct technology solutions is about carefully considering your workplace systems and requirements before making decisions. One important feature is getting a good financial deal, and browsing online is a great way of assessing which pieces of equipment, and indeed compatible software, are getting good reviews from others. There are lots of bloggers specializing in tech who will compare leading products regularly and happily give you their opinions. Some sites rank these, and names that come up frequently include InsideTech, Gizmodo and Mashable. Purchasing online is also often the best way to get a good deal. Implementation   When hardware is being upgraded, it’s important that everyone in your workplace is comfortable with and understands the new machinery â€" and this is particularly crucial if you are also introducing new software, including changing operating systems or updating to cloud computing. In most cases, businesses tend to enlist the help of a skilled IT team to do any installation work as this provides them with insurance that any problems will be put right, and often such teams also offer training support for office staff if needed. Depending on the changes being made, data transfers from old to new equipment and systems may be needed. This may be a substantial task, depending on the size and scale of work of the organization, so getting professional help can be a bonus. Software changes are nearly always a part of upgrading your office technology. Introducing new operating systems, such as switching from Windows to Mac, can be very beneficial if your staff team will then be equipped for mobile working. If you are changing systems to make them compatible with, say, iPads and iPhones, this will help you coordinate better staff contact and communication in the future. Changing to cloud computing Updating to cloud computing is having an important impact on office technology, allowing improved communication in real time between office workers in different locations and multiple sharing of vital information and documents. Storing data in the cloud means that it can be retrieved by all those who have the correct permissions on a variety of devices, including smartphones, laptops, tablets, and desktops. If you decide to look for a cloud computing provider, consider what it is you want them to deliver. Broadly, the options are Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), which is the most basic model; Platform as a Service (PaaS), which delivers a computing platform and operating system; and Software as a Service (SaaS), which is the most comprehensive model most often chosen by businesses. Take your people along with you When making your decisions, it pays to be mindful of the impact this will have on your office workers. It’s worth remembering that staff members are often very wary of IT change. This may be because they are worried that they won’t understand any new requirements, or won’t be able to do their jobs correctly following the changes. In fact, it’s worth putting a lot of emphasis on getting their training right so that they’re comfortable and able to adjust well. A happy workforce is generally a more productive one.

10 Steps to Ensure Safe Volunteering Abroad for Women

10 Steps to Ensure Safe Volunteering Abroad for Women Traveling for volunteer work has grown in popularity in the last few years, and many women are getting into the spirit of travel and charity. We have all heard the adage safety in numbers. However, there are many reasons to stay vigilant despite the growing number of women traveling to foreign countries for this purpose. For one, despite more women fearlessly getting on to a flight to far flung locations to extend their help and kindness, it does not change some pre-existing cultural notions that some of these countries have. Women are far more conservative and are treated differently in some countries that are receiving volunteers. It is a matter of safety and respect that women carry themselves with proper demeanor at all times. Here are ten important things to remember when volunteering abroad as a woman. Dont Romanticize Volunteer Work. Be Smart About Picking Your Program. Not all volunteer organizations are the same, and you need to be very practical about which organization to go with. Make sure that you are part of an organization that does a complete background check, not just for your safety but for the integrity of your efforts. Read up on everything there is to know about the program from their activities to the experience of people who have previously joined the activities of the organization. You want to know everything about the mission and processes of the organization before jumping in. Report to your volunteer organization at all times. Whether going out for volunteer work or for fun, it is better to let someone from your volunteer organization know where you are headed. A lot of these organization differ in leniency based on their locations. It is best to heed their advice at all times and let them know what youre up to. Stay in constant communication with family and friends. One tip I always give my friends who are traveling for whatever purpose it is, is to set a schedule to call or communicate with a family member. A text, email, or call at a designated time can help them keep a peace of mind about your status and can be a good indicator if you are in danger. Always let them know ahead if you are not able to make the schedule so you dont worry them. Pick Your Battles In some cases, you may come across disrespectful glares and remarks from people who are averse to you being in their locality. Sometimes it can even happen for no apparent reason. Resist the urge to fight back, you will need to hold your emotions and think logically. Always be in Familiar Company Whether taking blood pressure or taking a night off with friends, make sure to practice kindness to everyone, but also be wary of your company. Always stick to people you know, and dont go running off with unfamiliar company no matter how nice they are. While turning strangers into friends is a promising adventure, it can also be a very dangerous one. Know the Ins and Outs of Your Travel Insurance Policy Every traveler knows that getting a travel medical insurance is probably the most important thing in your travel checklist. Ensure that you are covered for any health or accident issues that can arise, and make sure that you understand how it works. Dress appropriately. Many of these countries that require volunteer work have much warmer climate. This may lead a lot of women to think that it is fine to wear whatever they feel comfortable in. While comfortable tank tops and shorts are easier to move in, it may also raise some eyebrows from the locals and attract unwanted attention. Instead of cutting the coverage, go for light fabric that would still cover you but keep you cool. It is best to do your research on the acceptable clothing before packing, so that you do not find yourself needing to do some unnecessary shopping. Get Some Rest While the temptation to make the most out of being in a foreign land is strong, know that your body needs rest. So if you are looking to explore the country on your free time, make sure to schedule them wisely allowing for proper rest and recuperation for your body. Do Not Wander Alone Especially At Night Understand that the security measures of other countries can be very different to your own. Do not simply wander off at night alone, and if you should, bring a friend and ask where the safe places are to do so would be. Keep to Your Budget, and Save Some for Emergencies Be wise about your spending. Money is a security that a lot of traveling women forget, especially because it is so exciting to spend more when the currency exchange allows you to. Save some extra cash at all times to be able to manage should it ever be needed unexpectedly. Voluntourism is a great opportunity to travel and do good, but in order to keep going, be sure to keep your safety at all times. Volunteer tourism safety is something you can understand better by checking out websites that provide peoples experiences and advice. Make sure you do everything you can do to be ready and informed. Safe travels!

At the same time, employees also incur additional costs in electricity, air conditioning and internet consumption at home.On the other hand, many employers today offer lucrative employee wellness programslike discounted gym memberships, laundry service and personal development programs that may not necessarily be available to remote workers. It is important to work out the math to understand if the benefits of working from home truly outweigh the benefits from a financial perspective. Some employers do offer to pick up the tab for such expenses borne by their workers. In such cases, taking up the remote working job is a no-brainer.Even if your employer does not take care of your at-home expenses, there are other intangible benefits that you must account for. Saving time on commute may free up your time to pursue hobbies that you may have not been able to otherwise. Living in a smaller town can also bring down stress levels and enable you to live a more healthy lifesty le.What’s the ideal salary?evalNegotiating a salary could be tricky for remote jobs. Do you base the negotiations based on what the employer offers for their in-office workers, or should this be based on the worker’s location?A $65,000 job in the US is considered average. However, this can be on the higher side in countries like India or Philippines. Even within the US, a pay of $100,000 for a software developer in the Silicon valley is regarded average while this is well on the higher side in the mid-west.Should an organization overpay their workers who located in Asia, or underpay those who live in cities that are more expensive than their own? As a general rule of thumb, it is recommended that employers offer a pay that is the higher of the two.For instance, an employer may pay their Indian employee nearly the same as what they would offer for the role in the US HQ while a company based in the mid-west may offer a higher pay to workers based in the Silicon valley. The reason this works is because this enables employers to pick the most skilled workers for each role. This improves productivity and revenues for your business.evalSo what really is the ideal salary for a remote job?According to a some estimates, the average pay for a remote software developer is to the tune of $115K a year while business analyst and marketing roles pay anywhere between $70,000 to $85,000 each year. Will you be a good remote worker? While remote working offers a lot of benefits to the employee, it is also important for you to know if you will indeed be a great fit for the role. This is especially important if you have traditionally worked in an office job and are new to remote working. One of the most important traits as a remote worker is discipline. Working by yourself at home can be incredibly distracting. It may be tempting to work while watching TV or take a quick nap simply because there is nobody to monitor you. A disciplined worker tends to be more productive in a remot e job than one who is easily distracted. At the same time, there are also instances where remote workers fail to demonstrate their productivity since they are not physically present in the workplace. Check with your potential employer if they have time tracking toolsto protect you from future conflicts. This is especially important if you are paid by the hour. The second trait that you must possess is written communication. A lot of real-time and non-real-time communication in a remote working job is through apps like Trello, Skype and Slack. All of this requires workers with an incredibly good written communication. While this is not a trait that could measure how good you are at your job, it is still critical for workplace collaboration.Thirdly, you must ask yourself if you are looking for a simple 9-to-5 job or if you are okay with flexible hours. Any remote jobrequires you to collaborate with workers and vendors who may not be available in the same timezone as you. This makes it n ecessary for you to be available outside the regular working hours in your timezone. If flexi-timings is not something you can afford, it is recommended that you opt for a regular in-office job or seek an employer from your own timezone. Finally, remote working can be quite lonely and depressing at times. Regardless of how many people you talk to over phone or Skype as part of your job, human beings still yearn for physical interaction. Is your social circle in your current job limited to people in the workplace? Do you have hobbies or other pursuits where you meet other people?evalIf you do not have such interactions with people already, it is important that you reconsider taking up a full-time remote job.Remote working is the future and the number of such job openings is only going to increase with time.
